RC cars - the Hobby for all Ages

For some, these are just mere toys, but never tell that to a true blue aficionado. Enthusiasts of RC cars would tell you that RC cars are very much like real cars in more ways than one. RC cars popularity has grown tremendously through the years. People might think just because they’re small they’re just simple mechanical toys. On the contrary hobby scale RC cars are composed of complex intricate parts that resemble full scale real life size cars, trucks and SUV’s. While there are some that are indeed manufactured and produced for children, RC cars hobbyists have their own versions, and their versions requires a certain mechanical knowledge to build and modify.

Now, what are RC cars really? They are complex small scaled cars driven by a motor and driven in a distance via a hand held remote control. Control information is transmitted by the remote control to the onboard receiver which receives the information and converts it into a language which the RC cars understand and follows. Hobbyists find great joy in building these RC cars and some modify them to make them look better than their stock configurations. Some add accessories much like real cars to make their RC cars look better and to make them perform in an optimized manner. Driving RC cars in a professional style takes a lot of practice. Many hobbyists do this so that they can participate in races. While some enthusiasts are mere collectors, they take pride in showing off their collections especially those RC cars that are rare and hard to find.

There are two types of RC cars. They are classified by which kind of engine powers their drive. These are the electric powered RC cars and the gas powered RC cars. Small but powerful motors push electric RC cars, they get their power from rechargeable nickel-cadmium or nickel metal hydride cells. Gas powered RC cars utilizes small internal combustion engines powered not exactly by gasoline but by a special nitromethane/methyl alcohol/castor oil fuel mix. RC cars for the hobbyists come in different sizes. 1/12, 1/10, 1/8 are some of the scales they come in. The scale refers to the fraction of the size RC cars come in, in relation to the real vehicle that they represent. More recently, larger scales have been produced to fully capture the feel of a car. They sport more complex engines that are powered by real gasoline, their engines are just a bit smaller than those of grass cutters but possess more power and speed since the bodies of RC cars are made from high durable plastic and are thus lighter. There is no real difference in the performance of electric and gas powered RC cars, but it has been known among enthusiasts that the electric powered RC cars are better for novice RC cars enthusiasts. In the long run though, with much research and determination any novice may learn the tricks of the trade and graduate to more complex schematics.

Just like real cars, the top grade RC cars need proper maintenance and regular check ups too. To the hobbyist this is just a part of the fun factor that makes this hobby more enjoyable. They learn how to take care and eventually modify the RC cars to maximize their potential. Many parts and accessories are available in the market in RC cars customization. This is good, because manufacturers have seen the growth in demand and if you ever need a part, locating one is relatively easy. Eventually, a stock RC car would lose all of its original component s to modification. RC cars hobbyists know that they have to be dedicated and prepared to spend some money.

Even though the RC cars have been around for quite some time, only the past few decades has the hobby grown into a sport. Many RC cars enthusiasts have formed clubs and produced racing events to showcase their RC cars and their capabilities. There are different degrees in which a race is done, ranging from the beginner to the elite. Cash prices are at stake with many sponsors another proof of the popularity RC cars has garnered. It doesn’t matter what, who or where you at, regardless of age, RC cars is a fun hobby for everybody.
